Solvang Business

Solvang Business

Over one million visitors every year come to Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley. They wine taste, shop, eat, golf, fish, bike, hike, boat, ride horses, watch plays, get spa treatments, and gamble. Solvang depends almost completely on keeping the tourist dollars flowing into town. And because of the movie “Sideways,” visitors come to the Santa Ynez area to follow in the footsteps of the pinot loving fictional characters of the popular movie, Miles and Jack.

In addition to tourism, agriculture is another prominent business in the area. The wine industry is growing fast in the Santa Ynez Valley. There are now over seventy wineries and tasting rooms with 18,000 acres of vineyards. Premium wines grown are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to wine grapes, the valley grows apples, walnuts, tomatoes, beans, and corn.

Large ranches in the valley raise and sell cattle and horses. Although the valley economy in the 1930’s to the 1960’s was dependent on dairy farming, today no dairies remain.
