The Santa Ynez Valley has a population of 20,000 people among the five communities of Solvang, Buelton, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, and Ballard, which make up the area. Solvang alone has around 6000 residents and Buellton has just under 4000 people. Unincorporated areas account for about 10,000 of the valley population. Los Alamos and Los Olivos and Ballard have the least number of people with 1400 and 1000 and under 1000 residents, respectively.

Whites comprise 88 % and Hispanic or Latinos of any race make up about 20 % of the population. Native Americans, which include the area Chumash, account for less than 1 % of the area’s population.

The median age is 45 years old and the majority of the population is married. Median income is $55,240, higher than the national average. Females out number males 52 to 48% and 29 % of Solvang residents have graduated from college or have an advanced degree.
