Solvang means “sunny fields,” and the sun shines most of the time in this wide valley. In fact there is sunshine on 340 days of the year in the Santa Ynez Valley. The valley stretches between the San Rafael Mountains to the north and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the south. The days are warm and the nights get crisp and cool. Perfect for growing wine grapes, too. Temperature variations are the greatest during the summer when there can be an almost 40 degree disparity between day and night. In the winter, temperature differences average 26 degrees.

The average day time temperatures range between 54 and 76 degrees, with highs reaching into the 80’s and sometimes reach triple digits. The hottest month here is August, when the average high is 92.5 degrees. Winter lows can drop into the 40’s or lower during the coldest month which is December when the average minimum temperature is 38.8 degrees Fahrenheit. Rain falls during the winter, the wettest month being February when the average precipitation is 5.47 inches. The total yearly average for rain in the Santa Ynez Valley is 19.31 inches.
